Practical field guide

Choose a field-tracking tool around decisions, not dots.

A practical way to evaluate location, visits and reports against the work your team does.

01

Start with three decisions.

Write down the decisions a manager makes during a field day: whom to call, which visit needs follow-up and where to assign the next job. For each decision, identify the information needed and who currently supplies it. This gives your evaluation a purpose beyond seeing pins on a map.

Separate visibility from completion. A person being near a customer location does not automatically establish that a visit was completed, a delivery was accepted or work met your quality standard. Decide which records your process needs in addition to location.

02

Test one complete journey.

Use an anonymised example that includes departure, travel, a site arrival, a visit and the manager’s review. Ask to see both the worker and manager interfaces. Include a connection gap, a delayed update and a correction so you can understand the operational limits.

Check the definitions behind each total. Recorded hours, worked hours and visit duration may answer different questions. Ask which kilometres are counted, which period is included and how missing records are shown.

03

Evaluate adoption and ownership.

Discuss device requirements, permission settings, battery considerations, access roles and support arrangements. Confirm how employee expectations and your internal policies will be explained. Document requirements that the demonstration does not answer instead of assuming they are included.

Finish with a short evaluation sheet: decision supported, record needed, behaviour demonstrated and unresolved question. Compare options using the same sheet. An attractive dashboard matters most when its records help your team act.
